HONOLULU -- The Honolulu Police Department said it will begin an internal investigation after five officers were indicted in a federal corruption probe.
Dozens of officers may be questioned in connection with the case, HPD said.
Department spokesman Capt. Frank Fujii said it's doing the investigation to assure the public that police officers are being held to a higher standard of conduct.
"If they did commit any infractions of our policies, then they would be dealt with accordingly. But, just as important is that if the names have come up and they committed no infractions of our policies, they would be cleared, and that would be great," Fujii said.
The officers indicted last week were caught in an FBI probe into police protection for gambling operations in Waialua.
Indicted in the gambling conspiracy were 21-year police veteran Sgt. Kevin Brunn, eight-year officer Bryson Apo and seven-year officer Glenn Miram. All three have been on paid leave for the year since this investigation began.
Three civilians were also indicted. They are Douglas Gilman Sr., who has a long gambling record, and his three sons, Douglas Gilman Jr., Charles Gilman and William Gilman.
Fujii said HPD is waiting for the FBI to turn over evidence before the department can begin its own investigation.
