New UK Newspaper Targets Casino and Gambling News

With the rise in popularity of online casino and online poker sites, as well as the growing popularity of land-based casinos in the UK, Ben and Zac Goldsmith are planning to put out a new daily newspaper for gaming news. The Goldsmith brothers are the sons of the late billionaire Sir James Goldsmith, and the two have teamed up with an impressive crew to put the newspaper, called The Sportsman, together. Former journalist for the Daily Telegraph, Charlie Methyn and Max Aitken will be behind the journalistic side of the paper. Aitken is the great-grandson of Lord Beaverbrook, proprietor of Express Newspapers. The Sportsman will have Jeremy Deedes, who was chief executive at the Telegraph group, for Chairman, while Compton Hellyer, who founded Sporting Index, a spread-betting company, will be non-executive director. The paper’s goal will be to tap into the UK gaming industry, which took in £44 billion ($76 billion) in bets in 2004. In addition to covering online casino news, online betting, and online poker, the paper will cover sports, city news, and political news. The paper is currently looking for an additional £12 million ($20.9 million) in capital to get moving. Source: OCN Staff
