Singapore Sets up Gambling Counseling Centers as Casino Plan

Singapore’s Thye Hua Kwan Moral Counseling Centre is gearing up for the introduction of Singapore's two new casinos. With the casinos, problem gambling is expected to be brought to the fore, and Singapore’s counselors are preparing to open counseling clinics to meet the new demand. Since Singapore’s mental health staff have virtually no experience with gambling counseling, they sent a team to Hong Kong’s City University to learn how gambling counselors are trained in Hong Kong. Hong Kong was selected because of both its proximity and its similarity to Singapore. The team from Singapore plans to work with the Hong Kong University to design a one to two-week counseling course. Singapore officials hope that Hong Kong University representatives, who have aided in setting up two problem gambling centers recently, will help Singapore set up their gambling centers, slated to include an international gambling center serving all of Asia. Hong Kong City University’s Professors recommended that Singapore train potential counselors in a short course, and offer increasing levels of courses to help counselors gain competence.
