'Morality' reason for gambling ban false

By Anne Beaver Re "Is Gaming Worth The Gamble?," Nov. 14 article: I am constantly amazed at sanctimony exhibited by some in Myrtle Beach. In that article Rep. Tracy Edge stated "I just don't see the possibility [of the General Assembly's approving gambling]. We're in the Bible Belt ... and I think that financially we have not been in bad enough shape to need that." Is one to assume from his comment that religion dictates that we not gamble? That is the reason we no longer have video poker, is it not? If what he says is true, being in the Bible Belt seems only important as long as we don't need money. Money talks and in talking overrides religion - "if we need the money." While we're on the subject of morality dictated by the "Bible Belt," what is the explanation for banning video poker and gambling and allowing the existence of so many "girlie joints"? Is the Bible OK with that? And has the presence of these places of business kept Myrtle Beach from becoming known as a family beach? Why would a casino have any greater [negative] effect? Lest anyone think I am just another Northerner come South to complain; not so. I was born and raised in the South and am a deeply religious person. I believe one's beliefs are to be used to guide him or her in action and deed. Those beliefs are not to be used to police others. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
